Golden Tate admires Scottie Scheffler's pickleball game: 'He had me out there just running sprints all over the court'
Former NFLer and Super Bowl Champion Golden Tate knows a good pickleball player when he sees one.
And after recently facing World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler in Nashville, he's adamant that the two-time Masters champion can defintiely hold his own - and even dominate - on the court.
Tate shared his thoughts on Scheffler's pickleball skills on the latest episode ofThe Smylie Show podcast, which is hosted by PGA Tour winner and on-course reporter Smylie Kaufman.
"I’d seen him play in like Celeb-Ams and I thought he had some game, but I didn’t realize how good he was," praised Tate. "His reaction time and his footwork were good, and he had, as we would expect, really good hands, soft hands, and he was able to place the ball, so it was really fun to play with him."
The Pro Bowl wide receiver was particularly impressed with Scheffler when the pair went head-to-head in singles after wrapping up a doubles match with Kaufman and PGA Tour star Sam Burns.
It sounds like Scheffler delivered quite a performance.
"He has a really good understanding for the game of pickleball. It was kind of wild. He was putting me in situations where I couldn’t create an edge," explained Tate. "I felt like going into the match I was more athletic than him, but after he whooped up on me twice, I was like, ‘Ok, this guy can play.’ I’d love to play him when we’re both fresh."
Tate says Scheffler basically dictated the contest from start to finish.
And he reiterated his hope for a rematch.
"He had me out there just running sprints all over the court. He’d just be sitting in the middle of the court, just like angles, angles, and I was getting one or two of them, but then the third one, he would just like close it out because I was burnt out and tired," added Tate. "I would love to get another game and figure out a way to get something going."
