5:40 p.m. PT: Koller, Hovenier move past Emmrich, De la Rosa in three-game battle
AJ Koller/Blaine Hovenier capped Wednesday's action on Grandstand Court with a 9-11, 11-7, 11-9 victory over No. 21 seeds Martin Emmrich/Daniel de la Rosa.
This week marks the first time that the two are playing together, and they’re off to a winning start in Palm Springs.
Koller/Hovenier will next take on No. 2 seeds Federico Staksrud/Hayden Patriquin in the Round of 16.
4:50 p.m. PT: Klinger, Ignatowich survive upset bid from Burl, Grollman
CJ Klinger/James Ignatowich avoided what would have been a massive upset against qualifiers Chiron Burl/Jericho Grollman, coming away with an 8-11, 11-3, 11-9 victory.
Their opponents put together a truly inspired performance with multiple displays of impressive hand speed, but the No. 10 seeds proved to be too clutch down the stretch.
There was one point of contention in the match's closing stages, with Grollman becoming upset at Ignatowich's 'out' call on match point and proceeding to storm off the court without the customary paddle tap.
Because the match was not played on Humana Championship Court or Grandstand Court, no video replay was available.
Now into the Round of 16, Klinger/Ignatowich will face No. 7 seeds Matt Wright/Quang Duong on Wednesday.
3:45 p.m. PT: Johns bros start final tournament together with win over Black/Pailet
Ben and Collin Johns kicked off their final tournament together (at least for the foreseeable future) with an 11-9, 11-3 victory over No. 33 seeds Nick Black/Erik Pailet.
The pair—who have had virtually unmatched success in men’s doubles on the PPA Tour—will split ways after this tournament.
Ben thinks the move will benefit both players in the long term.
“I think we’ll both develop in some areas,” he mentioned. “I feel like we’ve definitely locked in our partnership as far as our roles go which is great for our partnership, but when you switch, you definitely need to work on some new things and stuff you don’t always expect. I think either way—whether successful or not—we’ll at least grow as players.”
Even with the change looming, the brothers are solely focused on earning their third straight Masters crown.
“It was nice to have a little offseason. 2024 was a very long year, so we took some time off, and I think that’s gonna benefit us,” C. Johns shared. “We’d definitely like to start off strong and make it three in a row.”
The top seeds will face either Travis Rettenmaier/Donald Young or Jack Sock/Collin Shick in the Round of 16.
2:45 p.m. PT: Late run propels Smith, Devilliers to victory over Glozman, Newman
Callie Smith/Jay Devilliers are into the mixed doubles Round of 16 after a tense 8-11, 11-7, 11-8 win over Vivian Glozman/Riley Newman.
For a time, though, a victory from the No. 16 seeds seemed unlikely. Glozman/Newman jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the deciding game, but Smith/Devilliers rallied behind their extensive experience playing together and scored the match's final to secure their second straight three-game victory.
They will face No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson on Thursday.
2:35 p.m. PT: Wang, Tellez earn comeback victory over Mg. Brascia, Frazier
Zoey Wang/Pablo Tellez began their 2025 campaign with a come-from-behind 3-11, 11-9, 11-7 triumph over No. 12 seeds Maggie Brascia/Dylan Frazier.
It looked like Wang/Tellez were in trouble when they got down 2-7 in the second game after dropping the first, but the No. 19 seeds pulled off an impressive comeback to advance to the Round of 16.
They will next face No. 8 seeds Gabe Tardio/Jessie Irvine with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
1:45 p.m. PT: Gecheva, C. Johns upset Stratman, Arnold to reach Round of 16
No. 48 seeds Christa Gecheva and Collin Johns defeated No. 15 seeds Lauren Stratman and Julian Arnold by a score of 12-10, 11-6 to advance in the desert.
Earlier in the day, Arnold scored a notable upset victory over Quang Duong in singles, so this result likely stung a bit.
On the other side, this win is extra for special for Gecheva/Johns because they actually lost in Monday's qualifying round. They advanced to the main draw based on point differential and had a narrow victory over No. 24 seeds Alix Truong/Roscoe Bellamy in the Round of 64.
Now, they're into the Round of 16.
This result sets up a Johns v. Johns clash on Thursday, where Gecheva/C. Johns will take on Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns for a spot in the quarterfinals.
1:40 p.m. PT: Waters, Johns send Erokhina, Scarpa packing in mixed doubles
The top-seeded tandem of Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns defeated No. 31 Genie Erokhina and Anderson Scarpa 11-2, 11-6 to advance to the Round of 16.
Also advancing were No. 2 Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson, No. 3 Anna Bright/Hayden Patriquin, No. 4 Catherine Parenteau/Federico Staksrud, No. 7 Tyra Black/Christian Alshon, and No. 8 Jessie Irvine/Gabe Tardio.
12:15 p.m. PT: Sock ousts Roddy in men's singles, heading to Round of 16
No. 9 Jack Sock posted an 11-8, 11-4 victory over No. 18 Eric Roddy.
Sock was pleased with his performance, of course, even if he sent a good buddy packing in the process.
"We're both probably two of the more outgoing guys out there, whether we're talking to ourselves or talking to somebody else or saying something dumb to the ref," said Sock with a laugh. "I also think we both play better that way, keeping it loose. I feel like as soon as you kind of tense up and tighten up, the play is not going to be as good. It's how we both operate. I was just trying to focus on me and not look over because he makes me laugh with everything that comes out of his mouth. I'm sure we'll be laughing about it tonight at the house together. It's never fun playing a friend, but I was happy to get through it."
Also reaching the Round of 16 were No. 2 Connor Garnett, No. 3 Hunter Johnson, No. 5 Dylan Frazier, No. 10 Michael Loyd, No. 13 Roscoe Bellamy, No. 14 Gabriel Joseph, and No. 48 Zane Ford.
Sock will face Frazier on Thursday.
12:10 p.m. PT: Rane upsets Wang in three-game thriller
No. 20 Milan Rane is heading to the Round of 16 in women's singles after ousting No. 9 Zoey Wang in a match that went the distance.
The final score was 3-11, 11-7-11-8 in favor of Rane, who should be brimming with confidence following the notable triumph.
11:40 a.m. PT: Bouchard making noise in singles, books Round of 16 berth
It wasn't easy, but No. 15 Genie Bouchard ultimately defeated No. 21 Hannah Blatt in three games to secure a spot in the Round of 16.
Bouchard earned a 9-11, 11-2, 11-8 victory on Humana Championship Court.
During her post-match interview on Pickleballtv, the Canadian star was asked to compare The Masters experience to Wimbledon.
"I love the tradition of Wimbledon. I love the all-white, so I think it's really adorable that pickleball is doing that as well," said Bouchard. "I heard players complaining about having to wear all white, and I was like, 'It's literally for one tournament a year, so I think you can make it work.' I just love history and tradition like that. I think it's cute. We're trying to grow and we're trying to become like tennis someday, so I'm all for it."
Also reaching the Round of 16 in women's singles were No. 2 Brooke Buckner, No. 3 Lea Jansen, No. 5 Kaitlyn Christian, No. 7 Parris Todd, No. 14 Liz Truluck, and No. 16 Layne Sleeth.
Bouchard will face Buckner on Thursday.
11:30 a.m. PT: Arnold upsets Duong in three-game battle
No. 26 Julian Arnold punched his ticket to the Round of 16 in men's singles with an 11-3, 6-11, 11-8 victory over No. 4 Quang Duong on Showcase Court 1.
The ultra-competitive Duong is always a tough out, so Arnold definitely earned this one.
Arnold will face No. 24 Noe Khlif on Thursday.
10:55 a.m. PT: McGuffin dominant against Loong, advances to Round of 16
No. 6 Tyson McGuffin is clearly in fine form to begin the calendar year.
He needed just 21 minutes to defeat No. 28 Tyler Loong 11-3, 11-2 on Humana Championship Court.
It was essentially a clinic on the 20x44, so McGuffin couldn't be more excited about the 2025 campaign.
"I think the big thing for me is just staying healthy and having some fun out here," he said. "I feel like the last six months or so, I kind of lost some passion, so just staying hungry, being willing to go to war, and just have some fun out there."
Also reaching the Round of 16 early in the day were No. 1 Federico Staksrud, No. 7 Jaume Martinez Vich, No. 8 Christian Alshon, No. 11 JW Johnson, No. 12 Pablo Tellez, and No. 24 Noe Khlif.
McGuffin will face Johnson on Thursday.
10:25 a.m. PT: Waters cruises into Round of 16, defeats Dennehy with ease
It took top seed Anna Leigh Waters just 18 minutes to defeat No. 32 Sahra Dennehy 11-3, 11-2 in women's singles action on Humana Championship Court.
While Waters was unfamiliar with Dennehy's game heading into the match, that didn't affect her at all.
It was full steam ahead from start to finish against the Australian qualifier.
"I mean, because the sport is growing so much and new people are getting in, your first round used to just be, 'Oh, you're playing like a 3.0 who just wanted to play pro to meet the pros,' and now you never know if you're going to be playing the next star in the first round," said Waters. "I try not to think about it too much, just go out there and play my own game. But when I saw she was young, fit, and she's using a JOOLA, I was like, 'She's going to be good.' And then we went out there hitting balls. I think the main thing is just in warmup trying to figure out what her strengths and weaknesses were, and once you figure that out, it's good to go."
Also reaching the Round of 16 early in the day were No. 4 Catherine Parenteau, No. 6 Kate Fahey, No. 8 Mary Brascia, No. 10 Lina Padegimaite, No. 11 Dominique Schaefer, No. 12 Jorja Johnson, and No. 24 Jessie Irvine.
