Staksrud too solid, ends Ford’s run for men’s singles crown
Federico Staksrud picked up his ninth singles title of the year with an 11-7, 11-3 victory over No. 21 seed Zane Ford.
Ford was fresh off a string of impressive performances on Thursday where he took out Ross Whittaker, Grayson Goldin, Rafa Hewett, and Michael Loyd to make his first PPA final, but the top-seeded Staksrud put together a clinical performance to claim the title in two games.
One of the most impressive aspects of Staksrud’s play on Sunday was the way that he made use of the whole court, with everything from deep drives to drop volleys.
“The approach shots were key for me,” he explained. “I knew that if I could get to the kitchen line before him then that would be better for me, so I just wanted to focus on that.”
The Argentinian was also quick to applaud Ford, who is certainly a player to watch after making the quarterfinals in Milwaukee and a now a final in Holly Hill.
“Congrats to Zane. He’s had an amazing run, and you can tell that he’s working out and really training,” Staksrud mentioned. “It’s great for the game to have players like that.”
With this result, Staksrud closes out 2024 having earned at least one medal in every PPA Tour event on the year.
He says it all comes down to one thing: hard work.
“It’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes,” he explained. “When I’m out here, it’s kind of like show time, but the real work is done back home.”
In the bronze medal match, Michael Loyd cruised past Mohaned Alhouni 11-1, 11-1 to secure his second career PPA medal.
