2:55 p.m. CT: Semifinal matchups set
We're down to the final four in mixed doubles. Here are the semifinal matchups:
- No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson/Hayden Patriquin v. No. 5 seeds Tyra Black/Pablo Tellez
- No. 1 seeds Anna Bright/Dekel Bar v. No. 3 seeds Tina Pisnik/Andrei Daescu
1:35 p.m. CT: Pisnik, Daescu surge into semis in first tournament together
We haven't seen Tina Pisnik/Andrei Daescu compete together on the PPA Tour before this week, but it hasn't taken long for them to show that they're a formidable duo.
That shouldn't come as a surprise, of course, since both of them have made it to Championship Sunday in mixed doubles with other partners this year.
This week's No. 3 seeds came through their most recent contest with a highly entertaining 11-7, 13-11 victory over No. 9 seeds Allyce Jones/Travis Rettenmaier.
Pisnik/Daescu watched as a 10-7 lead in Game 2 turned to a 10-11 deficit after a string of incredible points from their opponents, but they held their never and eventually closed out the match without having to play a third game.
They will next take on either Anna Bright/Dekel Bar or Mary Brascia/Augie Ge for a spot in the final.
12:35 p.m. CT: Quarterfinal matchups set
Here are the quarterfinal matchups in mixed doubles:
- No. 1 seeds Anna Bright/Dekel Bar v. No. 10 seeds Mary Brascia/Augie Ge
- No. 3 seeds Tina Pisnik/Andrei Daescu v. No. 9 seeds Allyce Jones/Travis Rettenmaier
- No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson/Hayden Patriquin v. No. 7 seeds Lea Jansen/Max Freeman
- No. 4 seeds Kate Fahey/Federico Staksrud v. No. 5 seeds Tyra Black/Pablo Tellez
11:55 a.m. CT: Jones, Rettenmaier battle past MLP teammates Jk. Kawamoto, Klinger to make quarters
Allyce Jones/Travis Rettenmaier are into the mixed doubles quarterfinals in the Sunshine State after a wildly entertaining 8-11, 11-8, 11-6 victory over Jackie Kawamoto/CJ Klinger.
One of the keys to success for the No. 9 seeds (particularly Jones) was the use of lobs to keep their opponents on their toes in long rallies.
It's a shot that Jones prides herself on.
“I’m always looking for the opportunity to lob," she said. "I think that’s one of the biggest things—if you’re not looking for it, you’re not gonna do it in a match. And at home, I drill it a lot. It’s a big part of my game, and it’s very effective.”
Rettenmaier, a staple of the Florida pickleball community and owner of the Florida Smash in Major League Pickleball, is enjoying the opportunity to compete at a PPA event in front of friends from his local Crescent Lake community.
“It’s great to play in Florida," he mentioned. "I see a few people from around Crescent Lake and that, of course, makes it special just to see people that are kind of your home base peeps.”
He and Jones will look to continue their run when they face No. 3 seeds Tina Pisnik/Andrei Daescu next.
11:00 a.m. CT: Dizon, Koller rally for three-game victory over Black, Mg. Brascia
Meghan Dizon/AJ Koller booked their spots in the mixed doubles Round of 16 with a tightly contested victory over No. 25 seeds Maggie Brascia/Nick Black.
The No. 6 seeds came back from sizable deficits multiple times throughout the encounter; they were down 2-5 in Game 2 after dropping the first and 2-7 in the deciding game before eventually taking both by an 11-9 score line.
They will next face No. 10 seeds Mary Brascia/Augie Ge with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
10:00 a.m. CT: Waters, Segur battle past Truluck, Alhouni in three games
Even though Leigh Waters is a familiar face on the PPA Tour as one of the best coaches in pickleball, we don't get to see her compete on the 20x44 as frequently.
Friday is giving fans the opportunity to see just that, though, as she's playing mixed doubles with Dillon Segur.
Entering Florida as the No. 24 seeds, Waters/Segur started their campaign off successfully with a 5-11, 11-6, 11-7 victory over No. 15 seeds Liz Truluck/Mohaned Alhouni.
Their road will only get tougher from here, however, as they will next take on No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson/Hayden Patriquin.
9:55 a.m. CT: Black, Tellez overcome early test from Blatt, Goldin
Tyra Black/Pablo Tellez are into the mixed doubles Round of 16 after a 7-11, 11-3, 11-9 victory over No. 27 seeds Hannah Blatt/Grayson Goldin.
The No. 5 seeds seemed to be in serious danger of falling in their first match of the day when they got down 2-6 in the third game, but they fought all the way back to avoid the upset.
They will next face No. 12 seeds Tammy Emmrich/Michael Loyd.
