Playing more pickleball is the infallible New Year’s resolution
It’s still very early in the new year, so everyone is extra motivated to hit the gym and stick to their plan.
My quiet and unassuming neighborhood pickleball court has been absolutely slammed with players lately. In 2024, I never had to wait or fight for a spot, but the battles have begun and will likely continue for a little while.
Looks like “Play more pickleball” was a super popular New Year’s resolution.
But statistically speaking, the overwhelming majority of people who show up to the gym those first few days to fulfill their New Year’s resolution won’t be there for long. Studies show that only 9% of Americans who make resolutions actually keep them.
It's also worth noting that 23% of people quit their resolutions by the second Friday in January.
Will this statistic apply to the pickleball court, too? Only time will tell.
In short, these pickleball newbies won’t be picking up a paddle day after day because resolutions historically fail.
But if there’s one thing we all know about America's fastest-growing sport, it's that it’s addictive. And as soon as you get someone on the 20x44, they’re probably going to get hooked like the rest of us.
So does that make pickleball the perfect New Year’s resolution because it’s addictive, fun, and accessible?
According to the Fisher College of Business from The Ohio State University, resolutions often fail because:
1. They’re made out of tradition or peer pressure
2. Obstacles often get in the way
3. Goals are too broad
4. A lack of accountability
But pickleball is a near perfect resolution that avoids all of these usual downfalls.
The big issue when it comes to obstacles that could get in the way is people to play with and courts to play on. But if you strategically plan to go to open play during busier times in the day, like early in the morning or after work, you may have to wait your turn. At least you’ll get into the community, though, and hopefully meet new drilling partners and players.
Since pickleball is a community game, it’s easy to find people to play with who will hold you accountable. Find a buddy to play with and they’re basically your accountability partner. And if they’re a frequent player, they’ll probably be reaching out often.
“Play more pickleball” can be a broad resolution, but knowing how addictive the game is, you’ll probably have to keep yourself in check that you’re not spending too much time on the court. Because when you start playing, you’re going to play a whole lot more.
